Several new laws will take effect October 1, 2007 in the State of Arizona that are important to students and parents. Here are the highlights of two new laws that affect the student and parent population and recommendations on what you can do. The UA Parents & Family Association recommends that you visit the State of Arizona web page at http://az.gov/webapp/portal/index.jsp to learn more about the specifics of these new laws. As a courtesy to our parent and family population, we are providing an overview below.
REASONS FOR VEHICLE IMPOUND BROADENED
The parameters for impounding a vehicle in the State of Arizona have broadened. Your student’s car can be impounded if they are unable to prove current insurance coverage if stopped by a police officer for a traffic violation or traffic accident. Once a vehicle is impounded only the registered owner can retrieve the vehicle from impound. As a parent, if your student’s vehicle is registered in your name, you would have to travel to Arizona to retrieve the vehicle from impound. State Law provides that after thirty days in impound, the towing company can seize and sell the vehicle. The UA Parents & Family Association recommends that you always provide proper insurance for your student if they are driving while at school and that the student carries the current insurance card with them in the vehicle.
POSESSION OF FAKE ID NOW A FELONY
Possession and use of a fake identification card has been elevated from a misdemeanor to a Class Three Felony in the State of Arizona. Students found guilty under this new law may have to report this conviction to graduate schools and prospective employers. The UA Parents & Family Association recommends that parents remind their students about the seriousness of using a fake identification card.
