What’s New and Upcoming In Student Government?
By Tommy Bruce
ASUA Student Body President
And we are off! August and September have blown right by and ASUA (The Associated Students of the University of Arizona) is in full swing of operations. ASUA is the Student Government at the University of Arizona and works day in and day out to ensure that your students voice is heard and their experience at UA is a more positive and bright one!
What’s New? What’s Hip? What’s Happening? Well we are so glad you asked because ASUA sure has been busy! Some very exciting projects, programs and initiatives are on the horizon for the U of A campus in the next few months. ASUA is launching a University Committee on Sustainability, hosting the 3rd Annual Wildcat World Fair, bringing the Plain White T’s in concert for a UA Students Only Show, taking a ZonaZoo Road Trip up to USC for a football game, Working diligently to improve campus safety (Safe Ride) and of course on occasion the student government leaders are attending class. And this is all just in the month of October!
The ASUA University Committee on Sustainability is a student-lead effort to really put our best foot forward as an institution to make our campus more sustainable. A group of 8 UA students in collaboration with staff and administration will be drafting a 5-year plan for the ‘green’ future of our great institution. The plan of the group does not stop at the 5-year proposal, but hopes to begin implementation of some of its recommendations in Spring 2008.
ASUA Wildcat World Fair is a multicultural fair that ASUA has put on for the past 2 years and will continue to put on this year on October 17th on the UA mall. This is a wonderful event that allows UA students to celebrate and learn more about the cultures of their fellow students. There will be food, performances and many opportunities for UA students to enhance their experiences and knowledge base. On top of Wildcat World Fair ASUA will also be hosting the Plain White T’s in a private UA Students only concert at Centennial Hall on October 2nd (tickets on sale now at uapresents.org starting at only $12) as well as taking 90 students on a ZonaZoo Road Trip to USC to cheer the cats onto victory. These are only a few of the great campus programming activities that ASUA does to enhance UA student’s campus life.
In a continuing effort we are working to improve and expand our ASUA Safe Ride services that we currently offer, this is one of the best services that ASUA offers students. It is a free ride at night so we can get your student from their dorm/apartment/house to the library (or any other location within a 1-mile radius of campus) and back safely. As the campus continues to grow and develop ASUA is doing all that we can to expand the hours, the boundaries and increase the numbers of cars and improve our wait times to really support our students on this campus safety initiative. ASUA is looking for donations to truly enhance this service, if you are interested and able to donate please contact ASUA Administrative Vice President Jen Dang (jendang@email.arizona.edu) to help out. ASUA is working on many outside funding opportunities and increasing institutional support for this service to really meet the needs of your students.
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what ASUA is doing for your students in the upcoming months. Just a few other highlights for you, ASUA will be: Co-Hosting the Southern Arizona City Council Forum, Launching the UA VOTES 2008 voter registration drive, Presenting a Student Tuition Proposal to the Arizona Board of Regents, Launch the Mobile Campus discount & text messaging free service for students, offering Sexual Education Courses, Co-Hosting UA Coming Out Week, Premiering the 1st Ever UA Community Science Fair (UA Students will mentor 8th graders in a science fair) and seriously so much more!
